Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Singapore | Director of the International Orthopaedic Clinic (IOC)
Dr Alan Cheung is an experienced Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon born and raised in England. His areas of specialty are Sports Injuries and Robotic Joint Replacement, using the Makoplasty Robotic Surgical System.
Dr Cheung was educated in Cambridge, England and obtained his medical degree from University College London. He completed his surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in London, and underwent his Fellowship training in Joint Reconstruction and Musculoskeletal Oncology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia.
Currently, Dr Cheung is the Team Doctor for the Wrestling Federation of Singapore. He is also a World Rugby Educator and has been Matchday Doctor for international rugby events such as the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, and Super Rugby.
Dr Cheung has always been a keen athlete and played for Cambridge Rugby Club as a youth. Currently he trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts. He regularly competes in BJJ and has won gold in tournaments in Singapore and Japan. When not practicing martial arts, Dr Cheung enjoys golf, cycling and skiing.
Says Dr Cheung, “As a sportsman who has played a variety of sports and recovered from bilateral shoulder dislocations, and various knee and ankle injuries, I can understand where my patients are coming from. This helps me empathise and build trust, and I can discuss injury management and recovery in an intelligent way.”
Taking his interest in sports and profession as an orthopaedic surgeon to the next level, Dr Cheung is also the first American College of Sports Medicine-Certified Ringside Doctor in Southeast Asia, and actively provides medical coverage for numerous international sporting events.
In particular, He was previously Events Team Doctor for the Singapore Cycling Federation, and led the local medical team for the One Championship and One Warrior Series mixed martial events in Singapore. He was also the matchday doctor for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens and SuperRugby matches in Singapore.
Prior to establishing the award-winning International Orthopaedic Clinic (IOC), Dr Cheung was a Consultant at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. He has a passion for teaching and was a Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, teaching medical students and Orthopaedic residents. He has also been an international instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
Dr Cheung was an instructor on the first ever Hip and Knee Reconstruction course held in Myanmar. He is regularly invited to teach on courses in the Asia-Pacific region, instructing other surgeons how to perform the latest techniques in sports and joint reconstruction surgery. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and presented at many international conferences.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Cheung regularly consulted at the International Orthopaedic Clinic (IOC) branch in Shanghai, China.
After being educated and trained in the United Kingdom and Australia, Dr Alan Cheung has since gone on to work in Singapore, China, the United States and more. This global experience has proved invaluable in expanding his perspectives and experiences in the field.
